Histopathology-Cytology
About
Pathology, internationally recognised as “the bridge between basic sciences and clinical medicine”, is one of the most essential and pivotal medical specialties. Through detailed examination of tissues and cells, our specialised physicians aim to provide a comprehensive assessment of diseases, which includes:
detecting the presence of disease,
determining its aetiology, severity, and stage of progression,
analysing tissue characteristics that may contribute to or prevent disease development,
investigating the underlying pathogenic mechanisms affecting the human body, and
monitoring therapeutic outcomes with precision.
The Pathology Department at the German Medical Institute (GMI) stands out for its advanced infrastructure, cutting-edge diagnostic technologies, and highly trained medical professionals. With a steadfast commitment to clinical excellence and continuous innovation, our department offers highly specialised and accurate diagnostic services across all stages of patient care—from initial diagnosis to prognostic evaluation and the formulation of the most appropriate treatment plan.
Identification of prognostic and predictive markers is a core component of our personalised medicine approach, ensuring care that is precisely tailored to the needs of each individual patient.
Our pathologists are recognised experts in their field, equipped to manage even the most complex and demanding cases. They work in close collaboration with other departments at GMI as well as with regional and international medical institutions, actively participating in multidisciplinary tumour boards.
In addition, the department serves as a satellite biobank in Cyprus, actively contributing to scientific research and innovation in partnership with global research networks.
The department's expertise is reflected in every histopathological and cytological examination—fundamental tools for understanding disease. These procedures enable the thorough evaluation of structural and functional changes in tissues, particularly in solid tumours, where molecular biomarker analysis plays a key role in guiding prognosis and therapy.
At GMI, we remain at the forefront of diagnostic excellence, combining state-of-the-art science with a patient-centred philosophy to deliver accurate and personalised diagnoses rooted in the latest medical and technological advancements.

Operational Equipment
Accurate diagnosis is fundamentally dependent on the proper processing and preparation of tissue samples, in strict adherence to internationally established protocols.
At the German Medical Institute (GMI), our Pathology Department utilises state-of-the-art equipment and standardised procedures to ensure the highest level of diagnostic accuracy. This meticulous approach safeguards the integrity of valuable tissue specimens and guarantees reliable, reproducible results—ultimately supporting the delivery of optimal patient care.

Our Services
Our pathologists examine tissue and cell samples obtained primarily through biopsies or aspirations, performing both macroscopic and microscopic evaluations to establish accurate diagnoses.
In alignment with internationally recognised protocols, we deliver comprehensive diagnostic and prognostic information that supports our multidisciplinary medical team in developing personalised treatment strategies for each patient.
To achieve the highest diagnostic precision, we employ a wide range of specialised techniques, including histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and advanced molecular testing. Our department also offers a full spectrum of cytology services, such as exfoliative cytology (e.g., Pap smears), fine-needle aspiration (FNA), and the examination of pleural, ascitic, and pericardial fluids.
Additionally, we provide intraoperative consultation through frozen section analysis and offer second opinion services for specimens previously evaluated in external laboratories, further enhancing diagnostic reliability and patient confidence.

Research
Research constitutes a core pillar of the German Medical Institute’s (GMI) mission, driving progress in the understanding of disease mechanisms, the development of innovative therapeutic approaches, and the ongoing fight against complex conditions such as cancer.
The Pathology Department actively collaborates with research institutions both within Greece and internationally. It participates in scientific consortia and funded research programs, oversees doctoral research projects, and contributes to the global medical community through publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
Education
The Pathology Department is also dedicated to education, offering valuable learning opportunities for medical students and trainee pathologists.
In line with our commitment to continuous advancement, the department is preparing to integrate digital pathology into its services. This transition will enable faster and more efficient diagnostic workflows, support telepathology for remote consultations, and strengthen collaboration with national and international research centres.

FAQs
What is a biopsy?
In a biopsy, a sample of tissue, cells or a tumor is taken for analysis under a microscope. This sample can be collected in various ways, such as with a needle, surgically, or through a guided biopsy, where a sample of a tumor is taken using the help of imaging methods.
A doctor may recommend a biopsy to confirm that a tissue is normal or abnormal, and to determine the best treatment method. The area a biopsy may be collected from will first be identified through a clinical examination, imaging, or other laboratory tests.
This sample is then analyzed to accurately confirm it is normal, or to diagnose different diseases like cancer or chronic infections.
