Cardiac Surgery

About

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 17.9 million deaths each year. The most prevalent form is ischemic heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks if left untreated. Other major cardiovascular conditions include stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and cardiac valve disease—most commonly involving the aortic valve.

While certain behavioral risk factors—such as smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity—can be modified, medical intervention is often essential. In many cases, timely care from specialized physicians is crucial in preventing serious complications, preserving quality of life, and saving lives.

At the GMI Department of Cardiac Surgery, we offer expert surgical care for a wide range of heart-related conditions in our state-of-the-art facilities. Our internationally trained and experienced team of specialists supports each patient throughout their medical journey—from initial diagnosis through treatment and comprehensive post-operative care.

Our mission extends beyond treating disease. We are committed to delivering the best possible outcomes for every patient, with personalized, compassionate care at every stage.

Our Services

We offer a wide range of specialized services and individualized treatment solutions for cardiac-related pathologies. Beginning with advanced diagnostic evaluation, we utilize one of the most sophisticated cardiac MRI imaging systems available in Europe, enabling us to obtain highly detailed data to guide the most appropriate and effective surgical plan.

Our treatment options include:

  • Complete revascularization through coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

  • Aortic valve replacement, including minimally invasive techniques

  • Thoracic aortic surgery (root, ascending aorta, and arch)

  • Mitral valve repair

  • Mitral valve replacement

  • Repair of congenital structural heart defects in adults

Our department is equipped with the latest generation cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machines, featuring a mini-circuit (mini-bypass system) that promotes faster recovery and reduces the need for postoperative blood transfusions.

Operation Room

We are equipped with a state-of-the-art cardiac operating theater, including a hybrid room that enables both traditional and minimally invasive procedures. This advanced setup allows our team to tailor the surgical approach to each patient’s specific cardiac condition and individual needs.

Post-operative Care

Cardiac surgery is a complex intervention, and the average hospital stay typically ranges from 5 to 7 days following the procedure. During this critical recovery period, excellence in post-operative care and rehabilitation is essential. Our goal is not only to deliver outstanding surgical outcomes but also to ensure a safe and prompt recovery for every patient.

A dedicated team of physiotherapists and healthcare professionals provides continuous support throughout the patient’s hospital stay. From the day of admission to the day of discharge, each patient receives personalized attention to facilitate a smooth and comfortable transition through every stage of recovery.

To maintain optimal outcomes, we also schedule regular follow-up visits at our Outpatient Clinic, where our specialists monitor progress and ensure long-term well-being and quality of life.
