Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology

The Team
The Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the German Medical Institute is led by a team of highly experienced radiologists, whose expertise spans the full range of diagnostic and interventional radiological procedures. All imaging protocols are continuously reviewed and updated to remain aligned with the latest international guidelines and best practices.
Our department is firmly grounded in a patient-centred philosophy. Every imaging examination is monitored in real time by a supervising physician, ensuring the most accurate, effective, and personalized approach for each individual patient.
In the field of interventional radiology, our department is distinguished by its team of exceptionally skilled physicians. We are proud to be the only medical centre in Cyprus with the capability to implement pioneering interventional techniques across a wide spectrum of clinical indications, utilizing the full array of imaging modalities — including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This multidisciplinary integration allows us to offer truly individualized care, tailored to each patient's unique clinical needs.
Our radiology department is further supported by a dedicated team of Medical and Biomedical Physicists, making us the only facility in Cyprus with such an extensive and specialized physics team. The team includes:
Leonidas Georgiou, Head Medical Physicist – Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology
Natalie Panayiotou, Medical Physicist
Antonis Christofi, Biomedical Physicist
This expert group is responsible for ensuring full compliance with radiation protection regulations for both patients and medical personnel. They also play a central role in the development and optimisation of imaging protocols, with a strong focus on enhancing diagnostic quality while minimizing radiation exposure. Additionally, they contribute to research initiatives and the integration of innovative imaging techniques in close collaboration with radiologists. Their responsibilities extend to the training and education of medical staff in the principles and practices of medical imaging.
The department is further supported by:
Qualified Radiographers, responsible for the safe operation of imaging equipment, accurate execution of diagnostic procedures, and the overall care of patients during examinations
Specialised Nursing Staff, providing essential assistance during both diagnostic and interventional procedures
Administrative Personnel, who serve as the primary point of contact for patients, ensuring effective scheduling and offering clear, comprehensive information about our services and procedures

Equipment
The Radiology Department at the German Medical Institute is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology, including:
Two multislice computed tomography (CT) scanners
Two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems
A digital mammography unit
A bone mineral density (DEXA) scanner
Two digital radiography systems
A digital radiography/fluoroscopy unit
Multiple advanced ultrasound systems
This extensive array of diagnostic equipment, combined with the clinical expertise of our staff, allows us to deliver high-precision imaging studies with exceptional diagnostic accuracy. Our protocols are designed to minimize radiation exposure without compromising image quality or patient comfort, ensuring a safe and patient-friendly diagnostic experience.

Diagnostic Unit
The GMI radiology department is equipped with two multislice CT scanners, two MRI scanners, a digital mammograph system, a bone mineral density scanner, two digital radiography systems, a digital radiography/fluoroscopy system and a multitude of ultrasound systems. This equipment, in conjunction with the personnel’s expertise, ensures exams with high diagnostic quality, minimal radiation exposure, without compromising patient comfort.

Interventional Unit
Interventional radiology represents the specialized field within radiology that encompasses a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures conducted with minimal invasiveness, all under the guidance of advanced imaging techniques. The rapid development in imaging technologies, imaging software, and the state-of-the-art equipment employed in image-guided interventions, combined with the combined expertise of radiologists, has enabled the execution of numerous minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Many of these procedures, formerly deemed impractical or necessitated prolonged and invasive procedures, are now well within reach.

The Department
The Radiology Department at the German Medical Institute is one of the largest, most advanced, and fully integrated diagnostic and interventional radiology centres in Cyprus. It offers a comprehensive range of imaging and minimally invasive procedures, covering nearly the entire spectrum of diagnostic and interventional radiology.
The department is staffed by a highly skilled team of medical and paramedical professionals who are committed to placing patient safety, comfort, and well-being at the forefront of their practice. Ongoing professional development through education, research, and the adoption of emerging technologies is a core principle of the department’s philosophy.
Our radiologists work in close collaboration with radiographers, nursing staff, and medical physicists to ensure precise and timely diagnoses. Imaging strategies are carefully selected based on each clinical scenario and in line with international guidelines and best practices. Full compliance with both international and national radiation protection regulations is strictly observed, safeguarding patients and staff alike throughout the diagnostic and interventional process.
