About

Medical Physics – German Medical Institute (GMI)

The relationship between physics and medicine spans over two millennia. As early as the time of Hippocrates (460–377 BC), patient temperature was assessed using simple physical principles—such as placing a soaked cloth on the skin and observing the rate of drying.

Today, more than 20,000 medical physicists worldwide play a vital role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medical procedures. They contribute to the delivery of high-quality radiation therapy, the optimisation of image quality and radiation dose in diagnostic imaging, and the implementation of rigorous radiation protection standards for patients, healthcare staff, and the general public.

At the German Medical Institute (GMI), we uphold the highest standards of safety and quality, strictly following UK, European, and US protocols. Beyond adherence, however, we are also innovators—continually contributing to the evolution of medical care through the integration of advanced technologies and cutting-edge scientific practices.

Team

Our Medical Physics team is composed of highly experienced professionals who are recognised leaders in the field.
Team members actively participate in international working groups and committees of prominent organisations such as IPEM, ESTRO, EFOMP, ICRP, and EANM, contributing to the advancement of global standards in medical physics.

Through years of dedicated work and pursuit of excellence, the Department of Medical Physics at the German Medical Institute (GMI) has achieved several prestigious distinctions:

  • Elekta Reference Site

  • Centre of Excellence for RTSafe

  • Reference Site for Sun Nuclear

  • QIBA and EARL Centre of Excellence

Although relatively new, the department has already established a strong research orientation. It actively contributes to scientific knowledge through the publication of peer-reviewed articles, presentation of conference abstracts, and the delivery of expert lectures and webinars—both nationally and internationally.
