About
Department of Oral & Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Surgery – German Medical Institute (GMI)
Led by Professor Panayiotis Kyzas
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Surgery (OMFS/H&N) at the German Medical Institute (GMI) is headed by Professor Panayiotis Kyzas, a world-renowned Consultant Surgeon with distinguished expertise in Head and Neck Oncological Surgery, facial aesthetics, facial trauma, salivary gland disease, and advanced patient-specific surgery using 3D printing technologies. Professor Kyzas relocated to Cyprus from the United Kingdom to lead this pioneering department.
The specialty of OMFS/H&N Surgery encompasses a remarkably broad clinical scope, addressing a wide range of conditions involving the face, mouth, jaws, throat, and neck. The department provides comprehensive treatment for:
Head and neck cancer (ablation and microvascular reconstruction)
Facial skin cancer
Oral and maxillofacial trauma
Dentoalveolar surgery (e.g., wisdom tooth removal, dental implants)
Orthognathic (jaw) surgery
Salivary gland disease
Facial cosmetic procedures
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
Thyroid surgery
And more within the OMFS domain
Professor Kyzas brings vast surgical experience, having performed many thousands of procedures, including over 850 microvascular free flap reconstructions, which represent the gold standard in head and neck surgical reconstruction.
Research and Academic Excellence
The department aspires to become the first Head & Neck Surgery Department in Cyprus with a dedicated focus on clinical research and academic innovation. This vision is supported by Professor Kyzas’s strong academic background. In 2007, he completed a PhD thesis that led to multiple highly cited publications in prestigious international journals. He has collaborated with global initiatives to improve medical research methodology, including the PROGRESS Partnership (link).
Professor Kyzas has delivered numerous invited lectures internationally, participated in scientific congresses, and authored over 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications, which have collectively received more than 6,000 citations.
He currently serves as the Chief Investigator of the MANTRA trial—a groundbreaking UK multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) funded by the NIHR, launched in July 2023. This is the largest RCT ever conducted in the field of OMFS.
Due to his outstanding academic contributions, Professor Kyzas was appointed Professor of OMFS/H&N Surgery at Edge Hill University. In 2018, he was elected Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) and, as of January 2024, serves as its Editor-in-Chief—the first Greek Cypriot to hold this prestigious position. He is also a member of the Council of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).
Commitment to Excellence and Patient-Centred Care
Patient safety, clinical outcomes, and satisfaction are at the core of our department’s philosophy. We take time to listen, assess, and advise on every case that falls within our field of expertise. Professor Kyzas also provides expert medical reports and advice, as a fully accredited medical expert witness (πραγματογνώμονας), having authored hundreds of medicolegal reports to date.
In June 2024, he will complete a Degree in Law with Honours, marking his formal entry into the select group of medical professionals with certified expertise in medicolegal practice.
