About

Dr. Iakovos Georgiou welcomes you to the Department of Plastic Surgery at the German Medical Institute (GMI), where our mission is to provide personalised care of the highest standard. We are committed to offering each patient tailored treatment plans that reflect their unique needs, goals, and expectations—delivered with precision, professionalism, and compassion.

Service Provided

Personalised Consultation and Collaborative Care – Department of Plastic Surgery, GMI

During your initial consultation with your specialist plastic surgeon or a member of our expert team, we will take the time to understand what concerns you and how you envision your desired outcome. Following this discussion, our team will carefully present all available treatment options, clearly explaining the benefits and considerations of each, so you can make an informed decision tailored to your personal needs, expectations, and lifestyle.

At GMI, we believe in holistic, patient-centred care. That’s why we work closely with an interdisciplinary team of in-house medical specialists—from dermatologists and oncologists to psychologists and rehabilitation experts—to offer you a comprehensive treatment plan, seamlessly delivered under one roof.

Procedures offered by the plastic surgery team at the GMI include:

The Department

Reconstructive | Aesthetic | Lipedema Surgery

The German Medical Institute (GMI) is widely recognised in Cyprus and internationally for its state-of-the-art medical equipment and its unwavering commitment to exceptional patient care. The Plastic Surgery Department at GMI delivers specialised expertise across the fields of reconstructive surgery, aesthetic procedures, and the diagnosis and treatment of lipedema.

The term Plastic Surgery originates from the Greek word “plastikos”, meaning “to mould” or “to shape.” Its roots stretch back thousands of years, evolving into a sophisticated medical discipline aimed at restoring, rejuvenating, and enhancing both function and appearance.

Plastic surgery today is broadly divided into two main categories:

  • Reconstructive Surgery

  • Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive procedures aim to restore both form and function following conditions such as cancer, burns, traumatic injuries, or congenital abnormalities.

At GMI, our surgical expertise covers the entire body, with a particular focus on breast reconstruction after cancer. In close collaboration with the GMI Surgical Oncology team, we provide breast reconstruction options following tumour removal—using either silicone implants or the patient’s own tissue (autologous reconstruction).

The appropriate technique is selected based on clinical indications, patient preferences, and individual needs, ensuring a fully personalised approach. Thanks to this multidisciplinary collaboration, GMI offers comprehensive care for breast cancer patients—from diagnosis to treatment and ultimately to reconstruction—all under one roof.

Aesthetic Breast Surgery

We also perform a wide range of aesthetic breast procedures for patients who are dissatisfied with the size, shape, or symmetry of their breasts, including:

  • Breast augmentation with implants or fat grafting

  • Breast lift (mastopexy), especially after pregnancy or weight loss

  • Breast reduction to alleviate discomfort or physical strain

  • Gynaecomastia correction for male patients with enlarged breast tissue

Each procedure is conducted using the latest techniques, always prioritising natural results, safety, and patient satisfaction.

Lipedema Diagnosis and Surgery

A core focus of our department is the diagnosis and treatment of lipedema—a chronic condition that primarily affects women, leading to the disproportionate and often painful accumulation of fat in the lower (and sometimes upper) limbs.

Lipedema can significantly impact mobility, quality of life, and body image. Our team offers functional, lymph-sparing liposuction—a highly specialised procedure aimed at reducing subcutaneous fat, alleviating symptoms, and enhancing physical comfort and self-esteem.

The primary treatment goal is the reduction of pain and other symptoms, along with an improvement in functionality and appearance—leading to better overall patient well-being.
