Σύμβουλος Ιατρός Ογκολόγος

Ο Δρ. Βαλεντίνος Κουννής είναι Ειδικός Παθολόγος Ογκολόγος και Διευθυντής του Τμήματος Παθολογικής Ογκολογίας στο Γερμανικό Ογκολογικό Κέντρο στη Λεμεσό και διαθέτει εκτενή διεθνή εμπειρία στην Ογκολογία. Προηγουμένως, κατείχε θέση Ειδικού Συμβούλου (Consultant) Παθολόγου Ογκολόγου στο Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο της Οξφόρδης (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) – ένα από τα κορυφαία ογκολογικά κέντρα του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου – όπου και ολοκλήρωσε την εξειδίκευσή του στην Παθολογική Ογκολογία.

Με έντονη προσήλωση στην τεκμηριωμένη και συμπονετική ανθρωποκεντρική φροντίδα, ο Δρ. Κουννής έχει αναπτύξει κλινική εξειδίκευση σε καρκίνους γαστρεντερικού και ουροποιογεννητικού συστημάτων, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στους καρκίνους του παχέος εντέρου και του προστάτη. Συνδυάζει τη συστηματική αντικαρκινική θεραπεία – χημειοθεραπεία, ανοσοθεραπεία, ορμονική και στοχευμένη θεραπεία – με την υποστηρικτική φροντίδα. Η προσέγγισή του βασίζεται στην κλινική αριστεία, την επιστημονική ακρίβεια και τη γνήσια συμπόνια προς τους ασθενείς και τις οικογένειές τους.

Ολοκλήρωσε την ειδικότητά του στην Παθολογική Ογκολογία στο Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο της Οξφόρδης και κατέχει μεταπτυχιακούς τίτλους σπουδών, MSc στη Μοριακή Παθολογοανατομία και Τοξικολογία από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Leicester, διδακτορικό (PhD) στη Μοριακή Ογκολογία από το Πανεπιστήμιο Ιωαννίνων, καθώς και μεταδιδακτορική ερευνητική εμπειρία ως Academic Clinical Fellow στο Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine του Πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης. Το διδακτορικό και μεταδιδακτορικό του έργο συνέβαλε στην έρευνα για ανάπτυξη στοχευμένων αντικαρκινικών θεραπειών και στην κατανόηση των ειδικών μηχανισμών καρκινογένεσης.

Κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία, ο Δρ. Κουννής έχει καθιερωθεί ως ένας δυναμικός ογκολόγος. Έχει συμβάλει στη διαμόρφωση των ογκολογικών υπηρεσιών στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, μεταφραστικών ερευνητικών πρωτοβουλιών και έχει διατελέσει ειδικός σύμβουλος στο Κεντρικό και Νότιο Πρόγραμμα Βελτίωσης Γονιδιωματικής Καρκίνου του NHS Αγγλίας.

Το ακαδημαϊκό του έργο περιλαμβάνει δημοσιεύσεις σε έγκριτα διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά, συγγραφή κεφαλαίων σε αναγνωρισμένα ογκολογικά εγχειρίδια, ενώ η έρευνά του εκτείνεται στη μοριακή ογκολογία, στους βιοδείκτες, στην μεταφραστική επιστήμη και στην εξατομικευμένη ιατρική. Έχει παρουσιάσει το έργο του σε κορυφαία διεθνή συνέδρια και έχει συμβάλει σε εθνικές (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο) γονιδιωματικές πρωτοβουλίες στον καρκίνο και σε διεθνή προγράμματα παρηγορητικής φροντίδας.

Η ακαδημαϊκή και κλινική του πορεία έχει σηματοδοτηθεί σταθερά από αριστεία και έχει υποστηριχθεί από σημαντικές διακρίσεις. Από τα πρώτα του βήματα, έλαβε πλήρη υποτροφία για τις προπτυχιακές του ιατρικές σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο Ιωαννίνων από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας της Κύπρου, καθώς και πλήρως χρηματοδοτούμενη υποτροφία από το Cancer Research UK για τις μεταπτυχιακές του σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Leicester. Κατά τη διάρκεια της διδακτορικής του διατριβής, έλαβε την πλήρη υποτροφία «Ηράκλειτος ΙΙ» από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας της Ελλάδας. Η θέση του ως Academic Clinical Fellow χρηματοδοτήθηκε από το National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) στο Oxford University. Πρόσφατα, τιμήθηκε από το Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust για την παροχή Εξαιρετικά Συμπονετικής Φροντίδας σε ασθενείς με καρκίνο του προστάτη (Staff Awards 2025).

Σημαντικό ορόσημο στην καριέρα του αποτελεί η δέσμευσή του για καινοτομία στις ερευνητικές υποδομές στον καρκίνο. Ως ιδρυτικό μέλος, διαδραμάτισε καθοριστικό ρόλο στην ίδρυση του Διεπιστημονικού Εργαστηρίου Μοριακής Ογκολογίας (iMOL) και του Κέντρου Βιοτράπεζας Καρκίνου του Πανεπιστημίου Ιωαννίνων (UICBC). Οι πρωτοβουλίες αυτές αποτέλεσαν τη βάση για ουσιαστική μεταφραστική ογκολογική έρευνα, περιλαμβάνοντας νέους θεραπευτικούς στόχους, ανάπτυξη βιοδεικτών και δημιουργία πρωτοκόλλων βιοτράπεζας.

Αφοσιωμένος στην εκπαίδευση της επόμενης γενιάς ογκολόγων, ο Δρ. Κουννής συμμετέχει ενεργά στη μεταπτυχιακή εκπαίδευση και κατάρτιση. Είναι Εταίρος (Fellow) του Βασιλικού Κολλεγίου Ιατρών του Λονδίνου και διατηρεί ενεργή συμμετοχή σε κορυφαίους επαγγελματικούς φορείς, όπως το RCP (Βασιλικό Κολλέγιο Ιατρών), GMC,  ESMO κ.α.

Υποστηρικτής της διαρκούς μάθησης και της αριστείας στις υπηρεσίες υγείας, συνεχίζει να δραστηριοποιείται στον τομέα της ιατρικής εκπαίδευσης, της κλινικής διακυβέρνησης και της διεθνούς συνεργασίας.

Δίγλωσσος σε ελληνικά και αγγλικά, ο Δρ. Κουννής συνδυάζει διεθνή εκπαίδευση με τοπική εμπειρία, προσφέροντας εξατομικευμένη, τεκμηριωμένη, πολυδιάστατη και συμπονετική φροντίδα καρκίνου, στηριγμένη στη μεταφραστική έρευνα και στην πολυεπιστημονική προσέγγιση.

Ο Δρ. Κουννής εντάσσεται στο Γερμανικό Ογκολογικό Κέντρο, ευθυγραμμισμένος με το όραμά του για παροχή πρότυπης, τεκμηριωμένης ογκολογικής φροντίδας, προσαρμοσμένης στις ανάγκες του πολυπολιτισμικού και πολυδιάστατου πληθυσμού της Κύπρου. Η ένταξή του αντανακλά την κοινή δέσμευση για κλινική αριστεία, συμπόνια και ισότιμη πρόσβαση στην υγειονομική περίθαλψη.

  • Regular postgraduate teaching and examination preparation: 

Actively involved in structured teaching for PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills) candidates – the mandatory clinical examination for completion of Core Medical Training and entry to Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in the UK – delivering both local hospital-based tutorials and intensive nationally led revision courses. Teaching focuses on clinical examination technique, diagnostic reasoning, communication skills and exam strategy. 

 

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching: 

Dr Kounnis has delivered regular undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching throughout his specialty training and consultant career. This has included formal undergraduate teaching, bedside instruction, and tutorial-based sessions for medical students, junior doctors, registrars and nursing staff. Teaching has been delivered across a range of formats, including one-to-one supervision, ward-based practical teaching, small-group classroom sessions, and large-group lectures in auditorium settings, tailored to the learner’s level and clinical context.
